Radiology SA is conscious of keeping radiation doses to a minimum, especially for young patients who may need multiple scans over their lifetime. Protocols used by Radiology SA in selected cases can achieve a diagnostic quality CT chest at a dose of 0.3mSv, or the equivalent of about 3-5 chest X-ray examinations. This compares to a more standard CT chest dose of 7mSv, and naturally occurring background radiation, to which we are all exposed, of 2mSv per annum.
The case illustrated is of a young patient with a known diagnosis of alveolar proteinosis. The clinician wished to assess recurrence and extent of disease, the images clearly answering this question using our ultra-low dose protocol. Dose for this scan was 0.29mSv.
